Description:
Classic and romantic, ‘Debutante’ ushers in the season with masses of soft, light-pink peony-style flowers that glow against deep green foliage. One of the earliest-blooming japonicas, it brings welcome color to shaded foundations, woodland borders, and containers while maintaining a refined, evergreen presence all year.
Care Tips:
Plant in acidic, well-drained, organic soil; keep roots cool with a 2–3" mulch (avoid piling against the trunk). Water deeply and regularly the first year; reduce frequency once established, but don’t allow prolonged drought when in bud. Fertilize with an acid-forming fertilizer after flowering. Protect from harsh afternoon sun and drying winter winds. Prune lightly after bloom to shape (heavy summer/fall pruning can remove next year’s buds).
Landscape Uses:
Foundation plantings, hedges/espalier, shaded borders, containers near entries or patios, woodland gardens; pairs beautifully with azaleas, ferns, hellebores, and early spring bulbs.
Pet Note: Listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs.
